Last week, John Doe flew in to Athens to record some vocals on Cracker's newest album (which is being recorded here at Chase Park) and played a set that night at the 40 Watt. Most of the songs were from his two most recent releases, A Year in the Wilderness and Forever Hasn't Happened Yet, including Golden State, Highway Five, and Unforgiven. Cracker's Johnny Hickman played on a couple of tunes, and sang backup on Twin Brother. Doe introduced that song telling its backstory---but you'll have to see him live to hear it.
For the encore, he played X's See How We Are, with two modifications---"Down in Oklahoma/ they don't give a damn/ bout kids selling chiclets with no shoes on their feet," and "this freedom to die in the USA/ is driving everybody crazy."
Verdict: SO worth losing sleep over. If he comes to your town, don't miss it. Those two solo albums (the only ones from his solo career that I own) are outstanding.
