Jim Martin in Cobbham

Yesterday Cobbhamites Bertis and Katherine Downs hosted a fundraiser here in Athens for Jim Martin, the man who is running to reclaim Max Cleland's seat from Saxby Chambliss.  I hope hope hope people will get out and vote in the runoff.
When my husband and I walked to the Downs',  we couldn't help but notice this kid with a digital recorder on the sidewalk.  We made some joke about the Secret Service recruiting frat boys, and didn't give the matter any more thought until after Martin finished speaking, when two friends of ours mentioned they spent the talk standing in front of Saxby's camera.
Yes, Saxby's camera.  I guess some of his supporters hoped to catch Martin putting his foot in his mouth, the way Saxby did in October when he told his supporters (who tend to be Caucasian) to get to the polls because "the other folks are voting."*
No such luck.  Jim Martin delivered an inspiring address, paying tribute to GA Democratic senators who came before him like Richard Russell, Sam Nunn, David Gambrell and Max Cleland, asking for our support to get him to Washington to help President Obama pass his agenda, and to help bring an end to the war in Iraq.  He then left to attend an event in Atlanta with President Al Gore (his choice of title---which I really really liked).
One of my neighbors posted a great blog with pictures at Daily Kos.

*between Saxby, Paul Broun, and Governor "Let's Pray for Rain" Sonny Perdue, it's not surprising that people think we here in Georgia are backwards and ignorant.  Honestly, most of us aren't---we just keep having our elections stolen. (It happened in 2002 , and 2004).
