I just found out that I was awarded a spot on the waiting list for a residency at the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts. I'm thrilled- not quite as happy as I would be if I had been awarded the actual residency;)- but I am encouraged that a committee finds my work promising. Much of my time is spent teaching elementary school children---I don't know many writers and feel so removed from the world of actual writing. News like this makes me realize that all the time I spend alone with my notebooks and computer do have some validity, outside of my own personal sense of satisfaction and compulsion to create.
Plus, it's also always gratifying to remember that there are people out there who set up foundations to support creativity. I find the existence of such patronage particularly satisfying---the staff at Escuela Caribe did all they could to suppress my (and everyone else's) creative instinct.
A nice ending to an otherwise stressful week (my students are ready for Thanksgiving break---and so am I!).
